Ubisoft's newly revealed Assassin's Creed Shadows has already struck a chord with the gaming audience, with pre-orders "looking very strong" despite the title only being officially unveiled last week.
That's according to Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, who made the positive pronouncement on Twitter, citing unnamed sources. The industry insider says he doesn't have precise numbers yet but seems quite confident, stating that "no one in the know is disappointed with them".
Set in feudal Japan, a time and a place fans have been screaming out for the series to visit ever since it began, it's perhaps not the most surprising development. With an open world the size of Assassin's Creed Origins, it does seem like the series is getting a few shakeups.
Players can track and target their appointed foes in a non-linear fashion. Vantage points will still exist but only help the player scan the environment for points of interest rather than populating the map with dozens of objective markers. Light and darkness will play a significant role in stealth, perhaps taking a few pages from the Splinter Cell playbook.

Wow. You mean to tell me that normal people don't care if there's a black guy in Assassin's Creed? Who could have guessed?
I hope it's great and all, but I can't see past all the shady "AAAA" BS for the time being. I don't care about the neckbeards pearl clutching at the specter of losing AC's sanctity. The series foundations, according to Ubisoft, only exist to ensure it's "annually exploitable," keeping the audience exploitable as well. Nope
Hmmm $130 to play on time with all available launch content, $70 to play 3 days late, or $20 when it's inevitably going to be on sale 2 months after launch with many bugs patched out. Always an easy decision with Ubi.
Let me know when they have an actual preorder count, not some bs speculation by "those in the know"
@Jayslow its amazing that they think its worth over $60 to be honest. idc how hype people are because of the setting, it aint nothing we havent played before
Are people really this blind to go and pre order a game where they have no idea how the gameplay will look like? That is sad.
@Jayslow People never learn do they? Suicide Squad was clear evidence of how playing a game before its release was a stupid idea.
Already preordered the CE. 3hundo for fundo.
I love the statue that comes with the CE and the wall scroll and don’t wanna pay triple price to scalpers later so preordering makes sense. Also I am very excited for the game. The trailer looks better than I had been hoping for. Plus it feels like it is getting back to actual assassins instead of rando chosen one stumbles into assassin work.
It is hilarious watching others get mad at how people spend their money though.
@Enuo That's the first I've heard of this controversy tbh. You just have to accept that there will always be a couple of idiots on the internet, not much you can do about it.
People so quickly forget that Ubisoft has actually released a few bangers recently (AC Mirage, PoP: The Lost Crown, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora) and that you can confidently preorder one of their games, knowing that it will be quality. Just ignore all the haters and politics.. you'll be a lot happier in life.
Also, why is no one talking about the fact that you can just buy a one month subscription to play the game?? You even get all the preorder stuff. That's how I've been playing their games and it's saving me a boatload of money. I'll play them now on the sub and then buy them later when they are heavily discounted. Seems like a win-win to me.
Don't ask questions. Just consume product and look forward to next product.
@Zenos Should you choose to do so
@Nepp67 Yeah, people are incredibly dumb these days. The ONLY reason they actually pre-ordered, i'm certain, is because of the name. AC has become too big to fail (unfortunately).
Really wish Ubisoft would give some of their older titles another chance, but alas. Why would they if the sheeple just mass buy their most popular product, no matter what?
@Frmknst I can understand with indy games as it can be a welcome sign of support. With huge studios that have a track record of broken and overpriced day 1 releases though..?
@Nepp67 yes, yes they are!
@Frmknst People just blindly buying a product and celebrating it, even though they know nothing about it?? Assassins Creed is one of the biggest exemples of this - as well as Call of Duty and Pokémon too. Meanwhile, smaller titles literally have no chance because they're not ''mainstream'' or ''well known''. Damn shame.
@Frmknst If a game comes out that you want day one physically then you kinda have to pre order it to have it on day one, if you order it on release then you have to wait a few days for it to be delivered and the majority don't like to wait. For digital buyers though yeah I understand that theres literally no need to pre order and will most likely be on sale after two months.
I haven't pre ordered this but the hype surrounding it and the reveal trailer have actually persuaded me to buy Rise of the Ronin for now.
I shell pre-order nearer release as there's little point doing it this early.
@Nepp67 Its AC we all know how it will look and play.
Shocking, most people are simpletons, AC is kind of like Fifa or CoD, ofc it sells, regardless of price and quality.
The like to dislike ratio on the trailers tell a different story, why would anyone play this ubisoft drivel when they can play ghost of Tsushima?
I’m looking forward to playing this in a few years time after bug fixes, DLC, and price drops.
The way I buy all my games. 😎
@Zenos
And people do so like sheep.
Unless getting a steelbook case or something similar, no point pre-ordering.
@Enuo haha yes exactly!! Normal people also wouldnt care if they played as a white guy in an african tribe in 300AD. Normal people wouldn't care if they played as a Chinese woman in a native American tribe in the 1400s. Normal people wouldn't care if they played as an vietnamese man in Scotland during William the conquerors era. If they have a problem with us introducing diversity to history, then they must be rac1st.
@Fopal So this black dude is based on a black dude that lived during that time, in that area, that did some samurai things. Take some time to build better straw men. People will swallow magic apples, Bizzaro George Washington, and pope wizard battles in this series, but not that a black dude who actually existed in this time could be our protagonist. What an incredibly stupid group of people.
@Fopal "Introducing to history". Yasuke was already part of history though so that remark doesn't really hold water.
While I think it's kind of insane to pre-order a game 6 months away, I guess you kinda know what you're getting with AC so people who love that series will just grab it regardless.
the trailer looks good, but yet again there is no gameplay footage.
@NinjaNicky it really won't it's going to be ac origins with a different skin just like odyssey and valhalla were and i can say that because i have completed all those games, valhalla three times doing everything there is to do each time total snooze fest.
I will be pre-ordering for sure when I got the chance. Good to hear it's already doing well. I have no doubt it's going to be great! The new mechanics they have talked about sound really cool and interesting.
Turns out the internet hate this game has gotten doesn't reflect reality. Shocking.
@UltimateOtaku91 To be fair, with a digital pre-order you get to download the game days before release and then play it the second it turns midnight. Physical is arguably less justified because you could probably just buy it from a shop on launch day and get it sooner than it would've been delivered from a pre-order. Though obviously this can vary and not everyone would be able to do that.
@Deityjester Why on earth would you finish a game even once, let alone three times, if you think it's boring? What's wrong with your life that that was the best thing you could do with that time? 😨
@Matroska Yeah that depends where you're from and what game it is, in the UK the amount of actual shops you can go out to buy games from are getting less and less and even supermarkets are stopping getting games in. There's GAME but it's only in selected areas and prices are more expensive than buying from an online store like Shopto etc. Then the nicher the game is the less likely some shops will have it, there's a game shop near me but didn't have Unicorn Overlord in stock as they never even heard of the game.
@LikelySatan you mean to tell me that the pope wasn’t repeatedly kicked in the nuts in real life!?!? SURELY YOU LIE!
@Sacrosanctus Quality? You know there's never been a bad mainline entry, in fact at the very lowest i would say the weakest entry is still a solid 7/10 game. A big appeal of AC is exploring a big open world set in various historical settings and its why the series is so popular as there's nothing else like it.
The racists lost again.
@DennisReynolds I wouldn't give the series best entry over a 7.5. All of the work that went into making the early games is undone by the awful combat, stealth, and missions. Yes, Black Flag included. Those games practically play themselves. Everything is a context-sensitive mess, like a bunch of QTEs stapled together. The latter games are bloated and full of the worst AAA practices.
WHY ARE WE PREORDERING WITH ONLY A SINGLE TRAILER TO GO ON WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Especially the $130 version. If it turns out to be a dud (which, only having one trailer, we DONT KNOW) money could be spent on so many other great games.
The game will probably be very good but, I'm not going to buy a game that doesn't come in the disk.
@LikelySatan Well that's just your opinion.
@Deityjester “I beat Valhalla 3 times and did everything there is to do (200hrs each playthrough) What a snooze fest.”
Lmao do you not hear yourself?? Either you are really absent minded or you just like to complain smh
@UltimateOtaku91 Have you heard about our lord and savior Amazon Christ?
@Nepp67 i mean why do you care what people do with their own money? i haven't seen the game play yet , but i'm guessing its going to play like an assassins creed game but set in japan this time.
Cool... release now... I HATE WAITING I HATE WAITING I HATE WAITING..........................
Here's hoping it surpasses Valhalla as the most profitable AC game ever.
Why would it be surprising that a super popular mega IP that sells really well always would be selling well when selling a new entry that's been a fan pick theme since the first game? "Pokemon preorders look really strong - I don't have numbers, but everyone's pleased with them" - No headline ever.
Having said that, preorders need to die. There's no purpose to preorders. It doesn't set the game budget, it doesn't determine how many copies are printed, it determines nothing but acts as a testament to there being something fundamentally wrong with the mindset of gamers where they literally throw money at things that don't exist based on nothing but a commercial, months or years before the product exists despite continuous display that said product is often incomplete or broken when it finally does exist. No other consumer behavior exhibits the same level of lack of self control as gamers, and that's exactly how gamers have landed in a hot mess of exploitation.
Let's be real this will be a 7/10 or 8/10 game with 9/10 optimisation for consoles. I will probably get this on sale at Christmas, play it once and enjoy it.
@twitchtvpat Because it's people like that for why Ubisoft and Activision keep getting away with predatory practices.
Why? is the gameplay trailer out?
it's a Ubisoft game:
1. It always looks better in the trailers.
2. It's 50% off in 6 months.
Stop pre-ordering from this studio.
Most people complaining will never play this game, so not surprised the preorder numbers are positive.
@Balie3000 Do you work for Ubisoft or something?
Avatar was pretty meh and l haven’t bothered with Mirage. AC games are pretty repetitive and grindy.
@DennisReynolds yeah I know. It's mostly just frustrating to me cause I really should love the series. Just every time I pick it up I am mystified at the popularity.
@LikelySatan To be fair i'm like that with the Yakuza/LaD series. I know i should like them more then i do but i can just never get past the 10/12 hour mark, i just fall of them so easy and then have no desire or care to go back.
@Nepp67 no offense but worry about ur self more , and less what other people do.
@DennisReynolds I adore the Fist of the North Star Yakuza-like. The others never stop talking.
@twitchtvpat Likewise pal.
@Rols Maybe they should hire me lol 😂
@Maubari You're genuinely not able to see why big mainstream titles get pre order when indie games no one has heard about don't?
I'm pre ordering AC Shadows because I've played and enjoyed every other AC game, so it is extremely likely that I'll enjoy Shadows so I may as well get it as soon as possible. I'm not gonna pre order some random indie game that isn't part of any series because I don't know if I'll like it due to not having any prior games to base that off.
@cjay_001 A trailer and 17 years of AC games to go off.
7 years if you're looking for just the ones most similar to what Shadows will supposedly be
Why??? EVERY Ubisoft game drops in price like a rock within weeks of release, when do people learn?
Plus of you wait a bit I can almost guarantee patches to add some better performance new game modes will be added.
@James_42 after I got burned by the Forza series, I’m never preordering again. Even if you have loved past experiences, it does not guarantee the next one. Unless you got money to burn then do whatever lol
@Ryu_Niiyama. Same here. Could of pre-order the normal edition for about 50 bucks ( I'm not in USA),as one of our stores still opens the pre-orders with prices set 10 years ago. But then I saw a statue and that wall banner....300 bucks later I'm a happy happy horse who doesn't care a out all the outrage online
@cjay_001 I guess I've just gotten lucky then.
I've pre ordered probably about 50 games in my life and the only time I've ever been disappointed and regretted it was with Watch Dogs Legion as I adored the first 2 games.
